Identi.ca out of the gates

Just a few ours after launch and my email box is chalked full of subscriber notices for the latest buzz on the interwebs. As of this posting they were still under 3,000 users, but growing quickly. The small number of users actually makes the public time-line fun.

The Good:

OpenID Support
Open Source
Beginnings of an Open/Distributed Platform

The Bad:

No Delete
No SMS support
No User search
No mobile version

The Ugly:
It’s written to run on top of a single MySQL instance without sharding/partitioning support which will have a hard time competing with twitter in the scalability department. The name is a bit awful, twitter is a much cuter name. Besides, what are we going to call an update? A Ident? Not quite as cute as a ‘Tweet’.

I’m not really certain if this has the makings of a twitter-killer that can finally put an end to the fail-whale, but I’m really excited about the openness aspect, openid support and idea of a distributed micro-blogging platform. I would most enjoy identi.ca eventually being a WordPress plug-in and micro-blogging becoming an extension of my typical blogging and XMPP.

Everyone loves conspiracy theories, so I thought I would share the latest. Some of the developers who entered Google’s Android Developer Challenge (ADC) are accusing Google of giving MIT favorable treatment and an unfair advantage. Claims include extending the contest around MIT’s class schedule, providing students with devices (their not available to other contestants) and Google employees hand holding students.

Android Password Safe

I’ve got my first working Android application together. It’s just a simple password safe with some decent features for a first release including:

128 Bit AES Encryption
Password protected. Your password is needed to decrypt the data stored in the safe
All data is entrypted including notes, website link, description
Click through website link, will take you from your entry to the website.

Here are a couple of screen shots to give you an idea of what the application looks like (Click to enlarge)

Plans for future versions include:

Fetching/Caching of favicons
Customizable encryption. Maybe 256bit AES, DES, etc.

You can always download it and check it out for yourself. Let me know what you think and if you find any bugs or have ideas for improvements.
